IPTV device check

Pick your device and see whether it can run an IPTV player, how to install one, how many channels it can show at once, and what to watch out for. Covers Fire TV, Nvidia Shield, Google TV, Chromecast, Apple TV, Samsung, LG, Roku, phones and computers.

Quick answer: Google TV and Android TV devices (including Nvidia Shield), most Fire TV sticks and Apple TV run IPTV players well. Samsung and LG smart TVs and Roku have very few IPTV players, so a streaming stick is usually the better choice.

For several channels at once, the device's processor matters most. An Nvidia Shield, a Fire TV Stick 4K or 4K Max and an Apple TV 4K play 4 HD channels smoothly. The regular Fire TV Stick and budget Android TV boxes play 4 in HD on lighter channels, or 2 to 3 if they are heavy. 4K channels are heavier, so every device plays fewer of them at once.

Device by device

Fire TV

Fire TV Stick models on Fire OS install IPTV players from the Amazon Appstore, and others with the free Downloader app. Some of the newest Fire TV models run Amazon's Vega OS, which can't install apps from outside the Amazon Appstore. The 4K and 4K Max sticks play 4 HD channels at once smoothly; the regular stick plays 4 in HD on lighter channels, or 2 to 3 if they are heavy.

Nvidia Shield

The strongest common streaming box. It runs every Android TV IPTV player from Google Play and plays 4 HD channels at once smoothly.

Google TV and Android TV

Google TV Streamer, Chromecast with Google TV and Android TV boxes and TVs install IPTV players from Google Play. They can play 4 in HD at once: smoothly on stronger devices, while budget ones manage 2 to 3 if the channels are heavy.

Chromecast without a remote

The original Chromecast dongles can't install apps. They only show what you cast from a phone or computer, so they work only with players that support casting.

Apple TV

Apple TV 4K runs IPTV players from the App Store well. The older Apple TV HD works, but is slower with several streams.

Samsung, LG and Roku

Their own app stores have very few IPTV players, and Roku doesn't allow installing apps from outside its store. A streaming stick plugged into HDMI gives you far more choice.

Questions

What is the best device for IPTV?
For most people a Google TV or Android TV device, an Nvidia Shield, a Fire TV Stick 4K or an Apple TV 4K. They run the widest choice of IPTV players. For 4 channels at once, the Nvidia Shield and the Fire TV Stick 4K or 4K Max play 4 in HD smoothly; other Android TV devices can play 4 in HD too, or 2 to 3 on budget boxes if the channels are heavy.
Can I use IPTV on a Fire TV Stick?
Yes, on Fire TV sticks that run Fire OS. Players come from the Amazon Appstore or are installed with the free Downloader app. The 4K and 4K Max sticks play 4 HD channels at once smoothly, and the regular stick plays 4 in HD on lighter channels. Some of the newest Fire TV models run Vega OS, which can't install apps from outside the Amazon Appstore.
Can I watch IPTV on a Samsung or LG smart TV?
Only with the few IPTV players in their own app stores, and some need a paid activation. A streaming stick plugged into HDMI gives you far more choice for little money.
Can I use IPTV on Roku?
Hardly. Roku's store has almost no players for your own playlist, and Roku doesn't allow installing apps from outside its store. A Fire TV, Google TV or Apple TV device is the practical choice.
How many 4K channels can a device play at once?
Fewer than HD. HD (720p or 1080p) is light; 4K uses about 4 times the data and decoding, so a device that plays 4 HD channels at once may only manage 1 or 2 in 4K. Your internet also needs about 25 Mbps of steady speed for each 4K channel.
Does an old Chromecast work with IPTV?
Only by casting. The original Chromecast dongles without a remote can't install apps, so they only show what you cast from a phone or computer with a player that supports casting.
